A Good Month but Not Much Writing Done

Well, it’s been nearly a month since I last put up a post. There have been two reasons for that. One, I spent time with family I haven’t seen in 14 months and two, I decided not to through everything into a new story and finish off old ones while trying to build a collection of thoughts for future shorts stories or longer.

Spending time with family has been great. Living in Australia while having all my immediate family back in Ireland can feel a little tough sometimes. You only realise this when you are back in their company and you understand what it is you miss about them. For this reason I decided not to lock myself away for hours on end, writing, reviewing, rewriting and going through the plethora of activities that make up the whole writing gig. It’s safe to say that camp nanowrimo went bye bye for me but I’ll be back to tackle that in November.

The other reason I chose not to write was to make observations of everything around me. Being with people I love while heading out on daily excursions has given me a wealth of ideas for stories for the future. Not having the stress of getting it all down on paper or screen has been really cathartic.

The 80K word count I wanted to have done and dusted has been put on the back burner but I did it for the right reasons… I think.

Also I’m pretty excited about one of my short stories coming out in a horror anthology called “Nightmare Stalkers and Dream Walkers Vol. II“. It’s my first time in paper and ink print so it’ll be pretty awesome to see that when it arrive. It’s available through lulu.com or head over to the Horrified Press website.

Anyway, I’ll be back in the land down under at the end of August and plan to get pen to paper and words on screen. I want to have at least one novel length title out before Christmas (o:

  1. Oh wow – I can so relate to this. As a freelancer, I also think from one month to the next and know at the start of each month how much (or how little) personal writing is going to get done. This has been a very productive month on the work front, but I haven’t started any new writing (as intended). Oh well, there’s always next month (ie: Friday 🙂 ). Well done on the horror anthology – will check it out.

  2. Congratulations on your short story. Good luck to you. I don’t know how you stepped away. I’m almost envious. I don’t think I could do it. Yes, you did it for the right reasons, in case you were questioning yourself 🙂
